Today’s Menu: Designing Living Shorelines for Sea Level Rise in Virginia

Thursday, March 13, 2025 |12:00- 1:00

Join Wetlands Watch colleagues, Mary-Carson Stiff and Stacie McGraw, highlighting the release of a beautiful new resource for shoreline professionals, Designing Living Shorelines for Sea Level Rise in Virginia. This manual includes strategies for designing living shorelines that will adapt in response to sea level rise and provide continued protection from coastal hazards, along with more than two dozen examples of permitted and installed shoreline projects that utilize these strategies.

Mary-Carson Stiff is the Executive Director of Wetlands Watch. She joined Wetlands Watch to help her hometown region navigate the complex issue of sea level rise. Her expertise in floodplain management, land use policy, land conservation, and local government law help identify ways to discourage development and incentivize conservation to ultimately promote nature-based solutions to sea level rise adaptation. Mary-Carson is a 2013 graduate of William & Mary Law School, where she was in the first graduating class of the Virginia Coastal Policy Center. She graduated from Bates College in 2008 with a B.A. in English Literature and a concentration in Environmental Policy. She lives in Norfolk with her husband, two daughters, and their pup Commissioner Gordon.

Stacie McGraw is the Green Infrastructure Programs Director for Wetlands Watch and the Virginia Co-Coordinator of the Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional (CBLP) Program. Stacie’s focus areas include living shorelines, CBLP, native plants, invasive plant species, and Wetlands Watch’s small grants program. She is a Level 1 Certified CBLP, a Certified Urban Stormwater Professional, Southeast Virginia Regional Co-Coordinator for the Plant Virginia Natives Initiative, and a Member of the Living Shoreline Collaborative Steering Committee. Stacie is a graduate of the Horticulture program at Tidewater Community College and a Level 1 certified CBLP. She leverages professional training in writing, marketing, and horticultural science to promote nature-based solutions to environmental issues.
