Peter Ensign is a recognized expert in the field of green infrastructure/low impact development. He is a speaker in the U.S. and internationally on stormwater BMPs, green job training, workforce development, and urban rooftop agriculture.
Peter served as Executive Director of DC Greenworks achieving their Mission to “Promote a Thriving Green Roof and Green Infrastructure industry in the District of Columbia” in 2015.
He has designed and built 100’s of Green BMP installations – green roofs, rain gardens, conservation landscaping and rainwater harvesting – throughout the DC Metro Area.
Peter produced the DC Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE) film, “RiverSmart Rooftops in Washington, DC” that premiered at the DC Environmental Film Festival.
He co-created, “Growing Futures”, the 1st green roof maintenance training program in the District with funding through DC Water. 80% of trainees were hired in the industry within one month of graduation.
Peter has presented at “Cities Alive” and “Grey to Green” conferences, and spoken at EPA, Smithsonian and Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies sponsored events.
US Forest Service invited Peter to travel to Egypt to plan and design a rooftop research project at the American University in Cairo. He returned to supervise the construction of the rooftop design. The project is a resource for Cairenes to grow fruit and vegetables on their rooftops.
